Getting Around, Graz Travel and Graz Transport
(Graz, Styria, Austria, AT)

Graz Travel and Transport: View of central road and bicycle parkThe historical city of Graz is easy to travel around on foot, particularly around the city centre itself, although a number of affordable transport options do present themselves. Those wishing to travel by train will find that the railway station (Hauptbahnhof) is just a 20-minute walk from the city centre and perfect for day trips around Austria.

Tram transport is always popular in the city and the tram system features a number of different lines, which travel through the Jakominiplatz. Buses are also on hand in Graz and tend to connect destinations outside of the tram network. Tickets for both buses and trams are interchangeable and can be purchased at tobacco shops (Tabak).

Suggested routes for walking are available at the Graz tourist centres or at most hotels, should you wish to explore the attractions close up. Something not to miss is a trip onboard the Schlossbergbahn, a funicular railway with superb views beyond the Schlossberg.

Many visitors to Graz choose a hire car as their main mode of transport, with the city being conveniently close to major roads, such as the A2 and the A9, which heads in a north-south direction and passes through the famous Plabutsch tunnel. Those wishing to travel to Vienna should head eastwards on the A2, or alternatively along the more scenic S6, via Bruck.

The main railway station in Graz can be found on the westerly outskirts of the city centre, along the Annenstrasse, and is known locally in Austria as the Hauptbahnhof. Rail transport links many major destinations around Austria each day, with regular trains providing a particularly fast way to travel to Vienna, and departing roughly every two hours, along with a number of regular trains connecting Salzburg and even travelling as far as Munich (Germany) and Zurich (Switzerland). The rail route between Innsbruck and Vienna is an especially scenic way to travel, since the line features a series of viaducts and long tunnels, and is actually designated as a World Heritage Site.

Bus transport in Graz is complemented by an extensive network of tram links, which travel to and from the railway station and around the Old Town. Buses and trams link main central destinations around Jakominiplatz and Geidorfplatz, with tickets being valid on both and quite interchangeable. Tickets remain valid for either an hour, day, week or even an entire month. Buses also travel during the night, although this service is only provided at the weekend. There is no single main bus station in Graz. Instead, each of the operators are based within different bus terminals - Bahnbus and Eurolines at the Hauptbahnhof, and Portbus at the Andreas-Hofer-Platz.
