Those shopping for souvenirs in Graz will find plenty to choose from. A number of appealing confectionary stores around the Hofgasse and Sporgasse areas of Graz sell some beautifully packaged chocolates, with the boxes often decorated with images of the Emperor Franz Joseph. However, in general, the more ornate the packaging, the higher the price.

Tasty, green pumpkin seed oil (Kernöl) in another speciality of Graz and a good gift idea, and is only actually produced within the Styria region of Austria, being perhaps best purchased at local farmers' markets, such as the regular market on the Kaiser Josef Platz.




If you are visiting Graz for the weekend only and shopping in on your agenda, make sure than you purchase everything that you need on the Saturday, since almost all of the shops close on Sundays, with the exception of some bakeries and local cafes.

The Herrengasse in the main shopping street in central Graz and links a number of important plazas, such as the main square of Hauptplatz and the nearby square of Jakominiplatz. Many interesting shopping opportunities present themselves in this part of Graz, particularly along the interconnecting lanes, which include the Schmiedgasse and also the Sporgasse.

The Sporgasse gained its name after the plentiful weaponsmiths who were historically based here. These days, this steep alleyway is the perfect place in Graz to combine both window shopping and sightseeing, since many of the facades are extremely beautiful and often medieval in character. Close by and along the Sackstrasse, the Kastner and Ohler department store is worth a look.

Shopping malls are now an integral part of everyday life in Graz. These include both the Center West shopping centre and Shopping City Seiersberg, both of which are easy to reach by bus or tram.
